This is located near the entrance of College of the Ozarks. The challenge of this project was to create a serene setting with the close proximity to the entry road and parking. Our solution incorporated a tall stone planter that separate visitors and the grove from the vehicular traffic. The American flag was located as a continuation of the tree grid and the 6 additional flags were placed in the same grid pattern. The planter also serves as a signage wall and a backdrop for the seating and flags. Touch for map. Regarding College of the Ozarks Veterans Grove. The grove is dedicated to veterans that participate in the colleges Patriotic Education Travel Program. Its located parrallel to the schools entry drive and the trees are planted in a 30′x30′ grid pattern. When the company was approached about this project they were asked to include dedication plaques, an American flag, the six flags of the armed forces and seating. The location of the memorial was set on the north side of the grove adjacent to a parking lot and the main entry drive.
A crew used native stone to build the base. It will be surrounded by planters and prominently display the American flag, as well as the six service flags. A plaque from former President George W. Bush, who was at the college the day of the dedication, is be part of the display, as well as a quote from a student.
The idea for the grove came after a trip last October to Belgium, where students and veterans visited Peace Woods in Bastogne. Mullinax said a student noticed the impact Peace Woods had on one of the veterans and mentioned to a professor that it would nice if the college had something similar.
Each veteran is honored with the planting of a Sugar Maple, which is aligned with others to create the same unique pattern of the marble crosses at the American cemeteries in Europe. Next to each Sugar Maple is a bronze marker with a veteran's name. The College Historians student organization assisted with the planting and will help with maintenance.
