The school was built to serve African-American students of Reidsville, NC and Rockingham County. The graduates of this great institution have made contributions to society in a variety of vocations and professions.

The outstanding teachers and staff members of the school were served by the following principals:
Mr. J.A. McRae; Dr. S.E. Duncan; Mr. H.M. Holmes; and Mr. H.K. Griggs.

The original building was located 617 ft. north of this historical marker.
