Inscription.
This stone is from Castello di Verrazano, the explorer's ancestral home in Val di Greve Chianti, Italy. He was engaged by the King of France in 1524 to lead a voyage of discovery to North America aboard his ship Dauphine. That Voyage is recognized as the first-known European exploration of the Middle Atlantic coast where Verrazzano observed the natural beauty of the Eastern Seaboard and the vibrant culture of America's Native peoples.
 
Erected 2010 by Delaware Commission on Italian Heritage & Culture.

More about this marker. Russ McCabe from the Delaware Commission of Italian Heritage and Culture spoke at the dedication of the plaque on September 23, 2011. The 9.5" X 9.5" by 8" stone from the Castello Verrazzano dating from the 15th Century bears accession no. 2010.9 in the collections of the Lewes Historical Society.
