Inscription. An orphan, he apprenticed in his
uncle's mercantile firm. As a
successful businessman he was an
early and forceful advocate of
independence. He used his
knowledge and wealth to help
finance the Revolution. From
1774 until 1776 he held public
offices. He signed both the
Declaration and the Constitution.
