1. Downtown Eau Gallie Marker
Inscription. Lansing Gleason, a descendant of the pioneer Gleason family, recalled that downtown Eau Gallie had numerous fish houses, each with a barrel of whiskey set up at holiday times. A tin cup was provided on a help yourself basis. Things got pretty rowdy at times. Although Highland Avenue was the main street, there were not many people here. Saloon customers sometimes became excited and took to the street with rifles shooting up and down the thoroughfare. Nobody was ever hurt.

Joe Wickham, an early resident, recalled that Highland "used to look like a street out of an old western movie." The buildings had rooftops overhanging the sidewalks.
