Inscription.
Locomotive 488 was built July 1906, in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1925, it underwent major changes in Pittsburg, Ks. and changed to Locomotive 1023. Track was laid and locomotive was installed in Schlanger Park on September 17, 1955, after the city had purchased the locomotive from Kansas City Southern Lines for $1.00. The steam locomotive was the main mode of travel in the days of the Old Frontier.

Regarding Kansas City Southern Locomotive No. 1023. The locomotive and tender were located in Schlanger Park, in Pittsburg KS from 1955 until 2012. The tender was moved first, then the locomotive was moved on 9/9/2012 to the Heart of the Heartlands Railroad Club in Carona, Kansas, for preservation. The locomotive is the only surviving example of the KCS Class K-1 locomotive. This train was removed a late spring/early summer this year. There is now just a large slab of stone with a sign for the disc golf course on it.
