Regarding Pedro Cofiño and Ramon Palencia Shot by Firing Squad. From 1898 to 1920 Guatemala was ruled by the dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera. Cabrera was ruthless in jailing and killing members of any group that opposed his autocratic policies. During 1906 he faced various uprisings against his rule, which only increased his repression of opposition groups. During the night of April 23, 1908 two men that were suspected of opposing him were shot at the location of this marker after lengthy jail sentences. Interestingly, Pedro Cofiñó's family continue to live and prosper in Guatemala.
Stell Quan Rossell's book on the life of Guatemalan writer and poet Luis Cardoza y Aragón, "No es el fin, es el mar", discusses the events of the shooting (pages 25-27).
