Inscription.
Arnold, after going over to the British, was sent to Virginia to make war on the state. He reached Hampton Roads in December, 1780, raided to Richmond and came to Portsmouth, January 19, 1781. Establishing his headquarters in Patrick Robinson's house, and using the old sugar house on Crawford Street as a prison and barracks, Arnold remained here until spring. Then again he went up the James to open the fateful campaign of 1781 that won the war for America. (Marker Number Q 8E.)

More about this marker. This marker appears to have lost the year it was cast when it was repaired. It is listed in the 1985 A Guidebook to Virginia’s Historical Markers by Margaret T. Peters, but is not present in the 1948 version of State Historical Markers of Virginia, the sixth and last edition issued by the Department of Conservation and Development. We have not found a Virginia marker is all capital letters made after 1965, so this narrows the year it was cast as between 1948 and 1965.
