Inscription.  The third floor of this 1885 building served as a large dance hall where Irene and Vernon Castle, darlings of the Dance Mode in America during 1914–1915, became a weekly feature.

In 1965, the exterior of this building was completely covered over with glass-ceramic panels that typified the modern trend at that time. Fourteen years later, the panels were removed, the building façade cleaned, and the cornice rebuilt.

Also see . . .  Wikipedia Entry for Vernon and Irene Castle. “Vernon and Irene Castle were a husband-and-wife team of ballroom dancers of the early 20th century, who appeared on Broadway and in silent films. They are credited with reviving the popularity of modern dancing. ... The couple reached the peak of their popularity in Irving Berlin's first Broadway show, Watch Your Step (1914), in which they refined and popularized the Foxtrot. They also helped to promote ragtime, jazz rhythms and African-American music for dance. Irene became a fashion icon through her appearances on stage and in early movies, and both Castles were in demand as teachers and writers on dance.” (Submitted on January 1, 2015.)
