Inscription. From circa 1830 until 1925 a house stood on this site once occupied by Alexander W. Doniphan. A native Kentuckian, Doniphan practiced law in Clay County for 30 years, defended the Mormons, and founded William Jewell College. During the Mexican War in 1846-47, he commanded the First Regiment Missouri Mounted Volunteers in the longest march ever made by an American military organization. During this expedition, he became known as “The Hero of Sacramento.” The house was occupied at other times by Peter H. Burnett, first governor of California, and for many years the Hubbell family.
