Deitz, The Vietnam War refers to the period when the United States and other members of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization joined the Republic of South Vietnam in combating the invading Communist forces of North Vietnam. The U.S. provided the largest foreign military presence in this war. At that point in time, the Vietnam was the longest in U.S. history. Despite the loss of nearly 60,000 American lives, the Republic of South Vietnam ultimately fell to North Vietnam in April 1975. The Vietnam War experience remains a controversial topic that continues to affect U.S. political and military decisions., The black granite stone, rectangular in shape and contemplative in character, is engraved with the names of the war dead from Baltimore County it sits in a small garden, in harmony with its surroundings and making no political statement. In this peaceful refuge, the visitor may reflect on the sacrifice of all who served.
