Con gran vocacion para la carrerra elesiastica; ejemplo que siguieron posteriormente sus hermanos Vicente y Manuel, Proceres de la Independencia, de quienes era hermano mayor, en 1824 mientras su hermano Manuel se encontraba encarcelado y Don Vicente reconcentrado en Guatemala; Don Nicolas, si bien libre por consideracion a sus años, era vigilado pues aunque viejo y decrepito, era un formidable enemigo, siempre dispuesto a defender las ideas de libertad.
