Continental Army Encampment.
Brig. Gen. Henry Knox. in command of the artillery of the Continental Army used the field now covered by these ponds as pasture for the artillery horses. His soldiers lived in log huts erected on the hillside to the west. Nine brigades of the Continental Army were hutted in Jockey Hollow.

The pond seen in the background was a field in the 18th century, which Gen. Knox used to stable the artillery horses.

Gen. George Washington used this house as his headquarters during the Continental Army's encampment of 1779-80. It is located about a mile from the marker.
