1. Linlithgow Palace Marker

The west range, the plainest of the four fronts of the palace, was completed about 1504 in the reign of James IV. The row of large rectangular windows at the first floor level represent a suite of royal rooms: from left to right, the King's bedchamber, followed by an intervening lobby, two windows for the presence chamber and two more for the King's hall. These two rooms would have looked our over a pleasance or garden, laid out on the level piece of ground on which you are now standing. The Queen's suite of rooms was on the floor above; but while it mirrored the King's in its planning, most of its windows opened on the inner courtyard.

Captions
The battlements were added by the mason, Nicolas Jackson in 1504. The smoother masonry towards the right-hand corner represents the thickening added to the south front by James V in the 1530s, to make the palace look symmetrical when viewed from the south.

Mais alors qu'ils reflétaient le tracé de ceux du roi, la plupart des fenêtres donnaient sure la cour interiéure.
