Inscription. The Distinguished Service Cross (Army), Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross are equivalent awards. They are given to any service person who, while serving, distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor. The action must have occurred while engaged in combat with an enemy of the United States. The acts of heroism must have been so notable and have involved risk of life so exceptional as to set the individual apart from his or her comrades.
