Oldest surviving YMCA Building in California. In 1908 U.S. President William Howard Taft presided at the groundbreaking ceremony for this new building, which replaced the original central branch on Ellis and Mason streets. The original 1853 building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. YMCA night classes at both sites from the 1880s onward led to the development of Golden Gate University. Former Mayor Willie Brown (1996-2004) stayed here when he first arrived in the city.
