Inscription.
Baker was one of the original stations on the Mississippi Valley Railroad in 1884, and a post office was established here in 1888. Much of the town is on the site of the former Baker Plantation owned by Josephus Baker between 1845 and 1851. Good land and clear streams had drawn settlers to the area as early as the late eighteenth century.
