He was commissioned through the New Mexico National Guad in 1965, and called to active duty in February 1966. Severely wounded during his first tour in Vietnam, he came to Fort Bliss in July 1966 as an instructor in the Air Defense School. In October 1968 he volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam, where he was an evaluator with a Vulcon Weapons system Evaluation Team. Captain Wilson was killed in action 23 February 1969 during an enemy attack at Long Binh, when he gave his relative secure bunker position to several Vietnamese civilians, thereby exposing himself to an enemy rocket explosion which caused his death. He was awarded a posthumous Silver Star, and also held two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. . This historical marker is in Fort Bliss in El Paso County Texas
