1. Isabella County Courthouse Postcards Marker
Inscription. For all of its importance, very few postcard views exist of the courthouse. This is one of the best cards, a view from the mid nineteen thirties. After about six years of discussion a major addition to the courthouse took place in 1926. The addition was paid for after a special election to raise $18,000 was passed by the voters 1,691 for to 1,161 against. A considerable amount of space was added at each corner of the structure.

The original grounds of the courthouse consisted of 3.5 acres on which the building was centered. The courthouse itself was 80 feet tall to the top of the cupola. Outside dimensions were 71 x 57 feet. Most of the building had 12 foot ceilings except the courtroom which was 24 feet from floor to ceiling. Today only the cupola remains of the courthouse.

The courthouse was demolished in 1971 after completion of the new county building was built immediately in front of the pictured structure. The camera in this view was at curbside on north Main Street facing east north east. If one were to take a picture today from this same position you would have a photo of the main entrance on the south side of the County Building just a few feet away.
