1. De Burcht / The Castle Marker
Inscription.

The Burcht (the Castle) was built in 1900 based on a design by H.P. Berlage and commissioned by the legendary - General Dutch Diamondworkers Union (ANDB). ANDB chairman Henri Polak (1868-1943) wanted to build a monument for the labour movement. Many artists provided contributions to the decoration of the building. The beautiful staircase, original period rooms, murals, reliefs and stained-glass windows can still.be admired in their original glory. Nowadays, the Burcht houses a centre for debate and education in the field of labour relations with the same name.

Dutch trade unions differ from the similar organizations in most of Europe, since they have always tried politically to stay in the center and to look for a compromise and not for a fight.
