1. The 124th New York Regimentís First Battle Marker
Inscription. After the Union Army's disastrous events of May 3, 1863, the 124th New York Regiment of Franklin's Brigade, Whipple's Division of Sickles III Corps fell back to this area where the Mineral Springs Road crossed La Roque's Run (to the rear and right). It was the 124th N. Y.'s first "scrap" with the Rebels. The 124th N. Y. Regiment is widely believed the inspiration for the 304th Regiment forming the framework for the fictional Henry Fleming's experiences depicted in Stephen Crane's classic novel "The Red Badge of Courage."
