Regarding Martyrs of the Internal Armed Conflict from 1979 to 1983. Unfortunately, the transcription of the marker reveals that many of the names are repeated, some even three or four times. While it is expected that common first names may be repeated and it is also understood that family names in this area may be shared, it is not likely that the exact same names would be repeated in the exact order within the list of names. For example, the first names on the monument (Luis Mo · Jesus Mo · Santiago Caal · Mariano Bac · Santiago Chiquin · Ignacio Chiquin) are repeated again in the same order at the end of the list of names.

It is likely that an error was made when preparing a document with the names that was sent to the monument maker. By this Contributing Editor's count, of the monument's 348 names, only 166 are not repeated. This error is extremely unfortunate as it takes away from the tragedy of the civilian deaths during the Guatemalan conflict that should be honored and remembered with this monument.

Also see . . .  Guatemalan genocide at Wikipedia. The Guatemalan genocide refers to the massacre of Maya civilians during the Guatemalan military government's counterinsurgency operations. Massacres, forced disappearances, torture and summary executions of guerrillas and especially civilian collaborators at the hands of US-backed security forces had been widespread since 1965 and was a longstanding policy of the military regime, which US officials were aware of. A report from 1984 discussed "the murder of thousands by a military government that maintains its authority by terror." (Submitted on January 12, 2018, by J. Makali Bruton of Querétaro, Mexico.)
