Boise in Ada County, Idaho — The American West (Mountains)
(LIE-yak) A traditional Basque tool used for turning the soil
For centuries, Basques have used the "laiak" to prepare the earth for planting. This photo, from the early 1900s, shows Basque women poised for work.
From its stone base to its seven flying ribbons, the sculpture embraces Basques in Euskadi and in Boise - seven ribbons for seven Basque provinces; stone to honor the many Basques who cut rock for Boise's timeless buildings; an oak leaf to remember Gernika's enduring symbol of democracy.
This sculpture is dedicated in loving memory of Pat and Eloise Bieter and all who have sown a love of the Basque culture to be reaped for generations.
Mendeetan zehar euskaldunek "laiak" erabili dituzte lurra iraultzeo. Argazkian 1900 inguruan, emakumeak lanerako prest.
Harrizko oinarritik hasi eta hegan zabaltzen diren zazpi zinta hauek Euskal Herriko eta Boiseko euskaldunak lotzen dituzte; harriak, Boiseko zenbait eraikuntz egiteko lanean aritutako euskaldun hargianak omendu nahi ditu; haritz hostoa, Gernika demokrazi eukarritzat gogora dezagun.
Pat eta Eloise Bieterekin batera euskal kulturarekiko maitasun hazia erein duten guztien omenez, datozen belaunaldiek uzta bil dezaten.
