Regarding Site of the Surrender of Maximilian. As the siege of Querétaro was ending and Republican troops broke into the stronghold of the French and Mexican Imperialists at the Hill of the Cross (Cerro de la Santa Cruz), Maximilian attempted to escape the city. He was captured here and surrendered his sword to Republican General Mariano Escobedo, putting an end to the Second French Intervention in Mexico.
