About 9 o'clock A.M. the Battery took position in rear of Beatty's Brigade. In a short time it was moved to the left in a line with the 7th Indiana Battery and with it moved forward, following the infantry about 500 yards, when it was ordered 400 yards to the left at a double-quick, and came into this position about 11 o'clock. Orders were given by Major Mendenhall not to fire till the enemy could be seen coming out of the woods. By that time the Battery was receiving a galling fire from the enemy's infantry on the right flank. The Battery fired all the canister it had and was ordered to limber up, but it was too late. Eleven horses of the right section were killed and wounded, and this section was abandoned.
With the help of some infantry the other section succeeded in getting out, thus saving two pieces of the four the Battery took into action in the morning. Casualties: officers killed 1; officers wounded 1; men killed 1; men wounded 13; men missing 1; horses killed 37; guns lost 4; limbers lost 5.
