1. YWCA Marker
Inscription. The YWCA building, previously located at 22-30 Howard Street, was built in 1909. It was designed by local architect Eugene C. Gardner in the Renaissance Revival style. The building consolidated the boarding and educational functions of the YWCA, which formerly were in separate locations. The YWCA has played an important role in the social welfare of the community beginning in the 1870's, organized to provide room and board at reasonable rates for young working women. It was a social hub for women's education and activities as well as a day nursery. The historic facade has been recreated here as part of MGM Springfield. Many of the original building elements, including the friezes and medallions, have been salvaged and reused.
