1. Artillery Ridge Marker
Inscription.
"The attack was a huge bushwhack. The rebels availed themselves of the thickets, trees, fallen timber ridges, ravines and also of rifle pits and networks of earth and log construction at convenient points and being concealed and protected gave us a most destructive rifle fire retreating rapidly from point to point. At length we reached a ridge two hundred yards from their fortification and the enemy met us with a concentrated artillery and infantry fire."
-- Colonel Halbert E. Paine,
Union Brigade Commander

Site of pre-siege Confederate campsites, Artillery Ridge became one of the Union staging areas for the May 27 assault. The ravines on the backside of the ridge served as a protected area for Union campsites while the ridge served as an excellent position for three Union siege batteries. The trail leading from the "D" intersection to the creek bottom is the approach that Union forces used to attack the Confederate works on the morning of May 27.
