1. Cherokee County's Paul Revere Marker
Inscription.
Cherokee County's Paul Revere. . On the night of May 2, 1863, John H. Wisdom passed through Spring Garden on his way to warn Rome, Ga. about approaching U.S. Troops. Wisdom, originally from Rome, Ga., lived near Gadsden which was part of Cherokee Co. at that time. Upon learning that Rome was where Union raiders were heading, he set out from Gadsden around 3:30 PM. He stopped in Spring Garden long enough to get 2 fresh horses and would arrive in Rome a few minutes before midnight. He arrived in time to warn the town and allow them to set up some defenses that kept the party of 200 U.S. Troops that had been sent ahead to occupy the town from entering. Feeling the town was too well defended to risk an assault, the U.S. Troops withdrew. Wisdom had traveled approximately 67 miles in 8.5 hours.
