1. The Bridge Deck Marker
Inscription.  

The deck to the front, or fore, of a ship is called the forecastle deck. The term - pronounced 'fok-sel' - is an ancient one that originally referred to defences that were found on a warship.

Only the crew were allowed on the forecastle. Hatches on the deck provided the sole access to the crew's space and the lamp room below.

The original windlass can be seen in the centre of the deck. This winding machinery was driven by steam and was used to raise and lower the anchor and chains which were stored in the chain locker below deck.

'fok-sel' is an ancient term that originally referred to defences that were found on a warship.
