1. Avondale Marker
Inscription. Founded in 1750 as Lotteryville So named from the 1750 land lottery granted by the Rhode Island Assembly to Captain Joseph Pendleton to recoup the loss of his brigantine and its cargo on a return from the West Indies. Renamed Avondale in 1893 when the U. S. Post Office decried the lottery label. Original seaport for the Westerly area. Its old houses were once home to whaling captains and sealers. Captain Pendleton's home, the great house still stands on the Avondale Farm. On these shores Captain George Potter's company stood ready to repel the British in 1814.

Location. 41° 19.44′ N, 71° 50.35′ W. Marker is in Westerly, Rhode Island, in Washington County. Marker is at the intersection of Watch Hill Road and Avondale Road, on the right when traveling south on Watch Hill Road. Touch for map. Marker located at 90 degree bend in road, heading south at junction of Watch Hill Road and Avondale Road - clearly visible from either road, about 20 ft. from Watch Hill Road. Marker is in this post office area: Westerly RI 02891, United States of America.
