No country ever had truer sons ;
No cause - nobler champions;
No people - bolder defenders;
No principle - purer victims.

In honored remembrance shall we ever
hold those who were permitted to
return, and bravely resume their
duties, as true and loyal citizens.

[East face]
“Tell It, Ye Unfolding Years.”
One thousand brave men composed
the ten companies that went from
Marlboro into the Confederate service.
Their valor was displayed on the battlefields of
Manassas, Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg,
Chancellorsville, Chicamauga, Wilderness,
Morris Island, Cold Harbor, Petersburg,
Gettysburg, Franklin, Bentonville,
Trevillian and others.
-----------
“And the grief which lieth
behind, let us turn to the chase of forgiveness.”
