Inscription. Organized in 1845, this church was the original Baptist witness in this city. Early meetings were held in homes, stores, and the Courthouse. The church moved to this site in 1889. Other Southern Baptist churches have been formed from this congregation.
 
Erected 1976 by American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Independence.
