1. Last Chance Store Marker
Inscription.
"Last chance for beans, bacon and whiskey."

During the 1857 trading season, this building housed a store on the edge of Council Grove. Here was the last opportunity for the trader bound for Santa Fe to purchase supplies before venturing into the homelands of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, Kiowa, and Plains Apache Indians. The security of the Council Grove settlement gave way to the semi-arid, open plains.

Limited supplies were available at isolated trading ranches along the trail - the next supply station to the west took one to two days to reach from Council Grove.

The slogan used to advertise was "Last Chance for Beans, Bacon and Whiskey."

Erected by National Park Service, City of Council Grove, and MBR Enterprises.
