At New Almaden
During the Depression (1933-1942) and after most mining activity had ceased, New Almaden once again gave jobs, hope and future to young men through a program created by Franklin D. Roosevelt called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a group of hearty young men who provided community services such as fire fighting, road construction, and building construction. In return they received experience, money and an education.

Artist Freidolin Kessler lived among the men in New Almaden and chronicled their experiences through his art. Visit the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum to view a series of Kessler prints from Camp Mt. Madonna at New Almaden.

In 1933, Mt. Madonna CCC Camp Co. 739 moved from the Santa Cruz Mountains near Gilroy to English Camp, where the Army Corps of Engineers had built barracks originally intended for a vocational school.
