December 21st, Savannah surrendered to Union forces, and General Geary marched into city and took possession, making headquarters at Central Railroad Bank
Inscription. Georgia Historical Society records show that this building, built in 1853 for the Central Railroad & Bank was confiscated by Gen. Wm. T. Sherman's Union Army Forces as the military hdqrs. of the Post Commandant, Gen. J.W. Geary during the occupation of Savannah.
