Winterset in Madison County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
65 Jefferson Street
c.1875
In the 1800's, agricultural implements were sold here. The Marsh Harvester advertised that "it saves the house-wife the unpleasant drudgery of providing for extra help, during the hottest season of the year" implying that extra farm hands would not be needed if the farmer owned this machine.
Drug stores, including Ruth's Drug Store, occupied the first floor for many years in the early 1900's. Also at that time, in the second floor dance studio, lessons were given, and dances were held. Later, the first floor served as an Iowa State Liquor Store, a law office, and Madison County Realty.
The Nellie Callahan Scholarship Fund, which helps some Winterset High School graduates finance their college education, is funded by the proceeds from the sale of this building in the 1960's.
Erected 2008 by Madison County Antique Association.
