1. The Wilderness Road Marker
Inscription. Opened Kentucky and the west to rapid settlement and major development. First wagon road built by Kentucky, 1796 Crab Orchard to Cumberland Gap. A principal highway, maintained as a turnpike “toll road” for 80 years.
 
Erected by Kentucky Department of Highways. (Marker Number 55.)
 
Location. 37° 7.933′ N, 84° 5.264′ W. Marker is in London, Kentucky, in Laurel County. Marker is on N. Main Street (State Highway 80) south of E. 11th Street, on the right when traveling north. Touch for map. Marker is located in front of the Laurel County Schools Administration Office at the sidewalk entrance. Marker is at or near this postal address: 718 N.
