1. Barton Academy Marker
Inscription. Built 1835-1836. First public school in Alabama. Named for Rep. Willoughby Barton, author of Bill creating public schools of Mobile some 28 yrs. before State system. It was used as a hospital for Union soldiers in 1864.
 
Erected 1950 by the Historic Mobile Preservation Society.
 
Location. 30° 41.293′ N, 88° 2.846′ W. Marker is in Mobile, Alabama, in Mobile County. Marker is at the intersection of Government Street (U.S. 90) and South Lawrence Street, on the right when traveling west on Government Street. Touch for map.
