The Enclos is the former medieval forteress of Honfleur. This central area was surrounded by walls until the end of the 17th century. The last remains of the fortification is the Lieutenance, the former Gate of Caen which used to control the entrance inside the Enclos. In the 17th century it became the house of the King's Lieutenant.
At the beginning of the 100 years War, the King Charles V transformed the port into a military forteress because of its location inside the estuary.
The Old dock was built thanks to Colbert (King Louis the 14th's minister) in 1681 to replace the previous anchorage place which was narrower and inside the fortifications. Nowadays it's the marina. Along the Quai Sainte-Catherine, the tall houses dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It forms a very picturesque scenery.
