Inscription. The story of the Negev Brigade in the War of Independence (Nov, 1947 – March, 1949) The Brigade, whose ranks included local settlers, fought courageously against superior forces – Arab irregulars and the invading Egyptian Army – and defended the isolated settlements, roads, water conduits of the besieged Negev.

The Brigade played a vital role in a series of offensive operations that lead to the defeat of the Egyptian and Jordanian armies and the liberation of the entire Negev, from Beersheva to Eilat. A total of 324 of the brigade fighters, men and women, fell in battle.

The memorial was constructed thanks to the efforts of the late Micha Peri. It was designed by the sculptor Dan Karavan in 1963, and dedicated in 1968.

Its design and location express a special relationship between art, environment, and historical memory of the events. It is recognized as an important landmark in contemporary art.
