Lock 2. In the Middle. , The spot where Lock 2 once stood is located in front of this sign. It is outlined with concrete. By the lock were a locktender's house and shanty, as well as a blacksmith shop and mule barn., The Delaware Canal not only served as a route for cargo-laden boats, but it also provided water for other businesses. North of Lock 2 was an offshoot of the Canal, called Malone's Gut, which gave direct access to adjacent industrial yards., The Competition , Two years after the Delaware Canal opened in 1832, the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad Company opened an 8-mile section between Bristol and Morrisville. The line crossed over the Canal at Mill Street. It grew to be the main line from Philadelphia to New York and was acquired by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1871. This street level line was eventually abandoned after a new four lane, elevated track was built in 1910. Today, Spurline Park, a pedestrian trail follows the route of the original railroad line.
