National Humane Alliance Fountains Historical Markers

The National Humane Alliance was founded in 1897 by philanthropist and animal welfare advocate Hermon Lee Ensign. The fountains were free as long as cities agreed to provide a water supply and maintain them. Made by the Bodwell Granite Company in Maine, the fountains soon became obsolete as motor vehicle use increased in the early 20th century. Scores remain intact and on public display, although if there is water it is typically non-potable.
