Regarding Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. This marker and bust, like many others throughout Mexico, were placed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the beginning of Mexican Independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. The Independence movement was sparked in large part by Hidalgo and his followers. He is a tragic figure, as he was captured and executed by the Spanish military in 1811. After many successive patriots took up the cause of independence, it was finally won in 1821.
