1. Soldier Gulch - E Clampus Vitus Marker

Inscription. This plaque is in commemoration of two soldiers of a party from Stevenson’s New York Regiment who discovered Volcano Valley in late 1848 and camped here in Soldier Gulch through a hard winter. Their bodies were discovered in the spring and buried somewhere here by a party of Mexicans.

May these pioneer miners rest in peace.

3. Soldier's Gulch - circa 1860-1870

Soldier's Gulch in the foreground, with the town of Volcano in the background (the two story building on the left is likely the St. George Hotel or its predecessor). The gulch was heavily mined. Today parts of the gulch make up the town park and Volcano Amphitheater.
