It had different kinds of trees, rustic benches made of cast iron and planks of wood, and an artisan well inaugurated in 1990, from which hot water emanated. It is said of this well that the pilgrims that visited the Templo del Señor del Hospital, and drank its water in pitchers, due to the closeness to the image of the Cristo Negro, were granted health because of its rich minerals and curative properties. What is more, salamantinos asked the water carriers to bring thermal water to their houses.

Subsequently, from 1943 to 1944, the building and conclusion of the first Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market) in this area took place; the well was covered by a masonry kiosk and cement, with a handrail. The Mercado was demolished on 1971 and the artesian well was closed down, to make room for a public square known as Plazoleta Hidalgo 1972. As time went by, further alterations were made to the Plaza Cívica Miguel Hidalgo: in the 1985 restored obelisks were placed to honor historic salmantinos: Albino Garcia, Andrés Delgado, Emeteria Valencia, Tomasa Esteves, Bartolomé Sanchez Torrado, P. José María Marocho and Luis G. Araujo. Likewise, a bronze bust of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was placed as a memorial of its historical passage through Salamanca on September 24, 1810, to urge salamantinos
