Regarding Louis Pasteur. The statue and marker are very interesting in that they were placed 43 years after the end of France's attempt to impose a monarchy on Mexico under Maximilian of Hapsburg. It appears that the relatively safe subject of Mexico's Independence Centennial was chosen for the inscription. The subject of Pasteur for the statue is hard to understand in context, but he had passed away only 15 years earlier and was relatively well known, even in Mexico.
