Inscription.
Named in honor of John Harpendingh, a tanner whose homestead was situated at the corner of Maiden Lane and Broadway.

He was a public-spirited citizen who owned considerable land in this vicinity – a portion of which he bequeathed to the Reformed Protestant Church in 1723.

John Street first appears upon a map bearing the date of 1699. Describing a section known as The Shoemaker’s Land. Extending from Maiden Lane to Ann Street, East of Broadway.
