Lake Pittsfield was built by the City of Pittsfield for water supply purposes as part of the Big Blue Creek Watershed. The first multiple purpose watershed project pursuant to the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of the United States of America. It was chosen by the National Watershed Congress as the Watershed of the Year in 1963.

Regarding Welcome to Lake Pittsfield. Lake Pittsfield is also a recreational area which includes two campgrounds, a baseball field, a soccer field, some walking trails and a disc golf course. Some activities in the actual lake are welcomed such as boats (without motors).
