1. 83rd. Pennsylvania Infantry Monument
The statue atop the monument is not supposed to, but probably depicts Col. Strong Vincent drawing his saber. Note the Maltese cross of the Fifth Corps on the monument's front, above the state seal.
Pennsylvania regimental monuments were, by the preference of the governing board at the time, not supposed have likenesses of their commanders. Such statuary was reserved for individual monuments. Officially, the officer drawing the sword simply looks a lot like Vincent, but could be any of the regiment's officers.
The Brigade was hurried to Little Round Top about 5 p.m. of July 2d. This Regiment taking position in front of this monument and repulsing several desperate charges of the enemy after which this Regiment assisted in driving the enemy beyond, and in taking possession of Big Round Top.
