In memory of Captain Vance and the pioneer families who endured the hardships of flatboat travel to reach this place in the wilderness.

They lived in log cabins with dirt or puncheon floors, cat-in-clay chimneys, wooden hinged split wood doors, and greased paper windows.

They persevered to give us this historic city.

(Click for details.) The markers can be seen on the left side of the gateway in the photo. When the double-faced clock strikes the hour - - two carousels rotate on the upper level. One set, of the two carousels, are civilian oriented (fire - police - emergancy responders.) The other set are individuals of varied branches of the U.S. Military.
